A Cosy Rustic Retreat Blog Post

Autumn is Here

Don’t you just love this time of year? We’re starting to get that nip in the air that comes with Autumn. The leaves are starting to change, it’s getting darker at night and it’s finally time to get the cosy jumpers out again!

This weekend Alistair and I ventured North of Inverness into the Scottish countryside to do some hill walking and tackle our next Munro. The Munros are a group of Scottish mountains that have a height of over 3,000 ft. There are 227 Munros scattered across Scotland, and right now we have climbed just over 30 of them, but we are getting there slowly!

Forever Inspired by Nature

A cosy rustic retreat Inspiration board

I love to take inspiration from nature and my surroundings. While we were walking I noticed the beautiful colours of the plants and varying textures of the landscape. This got me thinking about new design schemes, feeling all inspired by the beautiful autumnal colours and the cosy feeling that comes at this time of year when candles get lit in the evening and the cosy blankets come out. I’ve put together a bedroom design based on this – a cosy rustic getaway – with plenty of cosy wool and sumptuous velvets, natural elements like wood and leather, and a beautiful autumnal colour palette of warm greys, rusty oranges and rich forest greens. The perfect place to hide away and relax at the end of a busy day!

I’ve designed this bedroom with a base of forest green and rich charcoal, with hints of autumnal copper and warm ochre bringing life to the room in the accessories. I love this velvet bed with the tall luxurious buttoned headboard from Made – its such a beautiful deep charcoal grey and adds instant drama and comfort to the bedroom. The chest of drawers and bedside tables add an industrial edge to the room and are a beautiful contrast next to the luxe fabrics. The raw finish of the wood reflects the rough textures found in the natural landscape, and the tone of the wood brings warmth to the scheme. The herringbone pattern in the wool blanket gives a nod to the Scottish inspiration for the design without being overpowering. I absolutely adore these photographic prints from Desenio –  the rusty colours are amazing and I am instantly transported to another place when I look at them. The beautiful oranges in these prints bring out the brighter touches in the patterned cushions and the brass of the wall lights. This will pull your eye around the room and tie the whole scheme together. I have included two lovely paint colours with this look too. The rich deep green will really make the room feel cosy and inviting, especially if painted on all the walls, while the soft grey has a warm undertone which will brighten any room.
